Announces the
3rd   ABC Conference (ABC-3)
Buddhism, Women and Education
Jinarakkhitta Prasad,
Jakarta, Indonesia
September 15-17, 2018

Today’s world is in dire need of peace much more than before. Among many religions and belief systems, Buddhism stands significantly prominent in pioneering peacefulness and mutual care. Being an Indic gift to the human civilisation, Buddhism in Asia has been a head source of the message. As you have seen in 2016, our ABC stood for not only a Conclave of ASEAN Buddhism in the form of international conference, the overwhelming support from academicians, scholars and practitioners, led our General Assembly commit to create  a larger platform. Hence, we have now our ABC becoming BIGGER and much more relevant in its new name: Asian Buddhism Connection. The new ABC stands for connecting with each other through academic scholarship, moral and monastic support and creating space for the women both as layperson as well as Bhikkhuni! Buddhism in Asia is at a cross-roads which require a wider interaction among peoples. While in the west, Buddhism is the fastest growing Way of Life, it has a very different scenario not only in decreasing number but also a common intra-analysis. The ABC Secretariat established at Wat Songdhammakalyani at Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, would address and analyse the issues with academic fervour as well as social commitment Venerable Dhammananda Bhikkhunī would be our guide and philosopher. She has been an established authority on women issues and Buddhism, while teaching at Philosophy and Religious Studies Department, Faculty of Liberal Arts, Thammasat University, Bangkok.
Our canvas now spans to entire Asia, which has been the action land of Buddhism. Thus, our ABC in new avatara stands for Asian Buddhisท Connection, which would cater to the needs of the understanding of the universal and eternal values of Buddhism. It would be a great source of inspiration for a better world order. The ABC also intends to nurture young minds with serious understanding of Buddhist scholarship, its tenets and past, present and future. Asian Buddhism today requires reinvigoration the gender studies, education, ecclesiastical order, environment and philosophy.
The ABC which was conducted in Thailand in 2015 and 2016 gives a good feedback to Indonesian Buddhists. Therefore, for the 3th ABC will be conducted in Indonesia by Sangha Agung Indonesia. The Sangha Agung Indonesia is hosting the international conference of ABC on “BUDDHISM, WOMEN AND EDUCATION” in 2018 (15-17 September) in Jakarta-Indonesia.
The reason of choosing this theme is because “Women is the first teacher of humanity and there is no humanity without education.”And, how these cores are envisaged from Buddhist perspective, is looked at in this conference through various sub-themes-

  • Education in Early Buddhism.
  • The Bhikkhunīs: Monastic Education and Training.
  • Contribution of Female Royalty in Buddhism.
  • The Contribution of Women in Asian Buddhism.
  • Buddhism in Indonesia: Past and Present.

This conference would also feature an exhibition of Buddhist Women and their Creation. And, on the last day, will be visiting Sakyawanaram Temple, the place where the founding father of Sangha Agung Indonesia, the late Ven. Ashin Jinarakkhita lived. He was also the first Indonesian monk who revived Buddhism in Indonesia after the sad demise of Majapahit and Sri Wijaya kingdoms as their end meant the collapse of Buddhism in Indonesia.
