One-week International Program This program is designed for non-Buddhist, English speaking international visitor who would like to learn about the basic concept of Buddhism living in a monastic setting at the only Thai female monastery. There are no prerequisites but the applicant must be willing to follow the rhythm of monastic setting. The one-week program is organized during the rain retreat (July-Oct.) See the exact dates below. Objectives Provide the space for women to live and practice in a monastic setting Provide the space for women to study basic Buddhist teaching Provide the space women to understand their responsibility to the society and the world. Provide the space for women to become changing agent for a better world. Expected results Upon completing this one week course, the participant should be able to - Meditate to maintain inner peace - Participate meaningfully in the Thai monastic daily chanting - Conduct common Thai Buddhist etiquettes - Explain the basic Buddhist historical background, principles and practices - Relate and discuss the relevance of Buddhism in a living context - Change the behavioral pattern regarding consumerist tendencies. Monastic setting requirements - Participant observes eight precepts, wearing comfortable white clothing to remind oneself of the purity of the monastic lifestyle. (Eight precepts include no killing, stealing, sex, lying, intoxicants and smoking, eating after noon, entertainment, high beds) - Participant take part in all activities designed for the program. Daily Schedule 5.30 hr. Morning chanting and meditation 13.00 hr. Workshop 7.00 hr Breakfast 14.00 hr. Lectures 8-10 hr Lectures 15.00 hr. Handicraft 10.00 hr. Meditation 17.00 hr. Community time 11.00 hr. Ch’I King 19.00 hr. Evening chanting, med. 11.30 hr. Lunch 20.00 hr. Q and A Lecture topics The beginning and the fall of the Buddha’s family, The Buddha’s Spiritual Discovery, the First Sermon, the Buddhist Canonical texts, the Sangha, Spread of Buddhism, Thai Buddhism, Position of Women in Buddhism, Engaged Buddhism,etc. Rituals Participant will get to practice and understand the basic Buddhist rituals. The most impressive one is going for alms round early on Sunday morning. This experience often brought tears to the participant to be part of this ancient ritual kept in tact in its pristine spirit. Handicraft It is added in, to brighten the afternoon sessions with choices of fruit carving, origami (paper folding), making beads. All is designed to train how to work with the hands and the mind.
